The museum has now closed.
The vehicles have been moved to a new location in Strängnäs near Stockholm.
Opening of the new museum is planed to spring 2011. It will be a mixed armour and softskin vehicle museum.
The construction of the new museum started in the autumn 2009.
URL to the new museum is www.arsenalen.se
Swedish Armour Museum.
The museum was inaugurated in August 1969 and at the end of 2004 the 400 000th visitor has arrived.
The museum was situated about 125 km from Gothenburg direction
Stockholm.
At the inauguration there were 27 armoured fighting vehicles in the museum.
Today the museum has nearly 90 vehicles, mainly objects showing the development
in Sweden, but also some vehicles from abroad. Some of the foreign vehicles are
the only survivors in the world! Nearly all vehicles are in running condition.
There is no driving with them because there are no spare parts to obtain!
The first tank in the Swedish Army was fm/21 from the end of WW I. It is a German construction, LK II, never used in battle. 10 of these were purchased. Also some French tanks were purchased during the first years, one FT-17 and one NC-28.
During the thirties, Landsverk in Landskrona in south Sweden constructed many tanks. One of these, a tank with wheel and tracks, by hydraulic power possible to change from wheels to track and vice versa even when running. Some tanks of Landsverk's construction were exported, Hungary bought the Toldi light tank and built about 300 on license, and the Nimrod AA SP gun was also built in Hungary. Nearly 50 armoured cars were exported to Holland, Ireland, Denmark and some other countries.
Most of the tanks and armoured cars in the museum are of Swedish construction and also made in Sweden. Thus they are not possible to see in any other museum than here. A couple Swedish AFVs were exported to other museums around the world the years around the millennium, mostly the S-tank that today can be seen in USA, Australia, UK etc.
